Within 48 hours of getting your new chinchilla, take it to a veterinarian that is knowledgeable in small animals. Most chinchillas purchased from a pet store or breeder come with a health guarantee. Before your chinchilla’s veterinary checkup, make a list of questions or concerns you want to address with the veterinarian.
During the veterinary checkup, the vet will:
- Determine the sex of your chinchilla
- Weigh your chinchilla
- Test a sample of your chinchilla’s feces for parasites
- Check for signs of dehydration and starvation
- Examine your chinchilla’s teeth
