Marylou Zarbock is the editor of the annual magazines Critters USA, Ferrets USA and Rabbits USA. She also edits Ferrets magazine, which switched from print to online in 2008.
Zarbock has been a fan of pets from childhood, sharing her life with dogs, an iguana and hamsters throughout the years. As a youngster she briefly hoped to become a veterinarian, until she realized that might require performing surgeries, which she couldn’t do.
As a child, she was also an avid reader and spent many hours curled up with a book. Her reading was so pervasive that her grandmother once commented to her that she should look out the window to see the world while on a car drive rather than keeping her nose in a book. She looked out the window from then on and was thankful for her grandmother’s wise words.
Zarbock graduated from California State University, Fullerton, with a BA in communications. It was a happy day for her in 1996 when she joined the BowTie Inc. (now I-5 Publishing, LLC) team as an editorial assistant on Dog Fancy. The work allowed her to combine two of her favorite pastimes by having her read and learn about pets. Since that time, Zarbock worked on Bird Talk and Birds USA before moving to the small animal titles in 2001. She treasures the people and pets she has met along the way. It’s been clear to her throughout her years of contact with the small animal community that there is nothing small about what these pets contribute to their owner’s lives.
