Throughout our younger years, we studied American and world history. Each year we learned a little more about the Civil and World Wars our heroic men and women have fought. Many lost their lives to give us the most important powerful meanings that make this great nation what it is today. They are unity, liberty, justice, freedom, and pride. Every year that went by studying those subjects in school, I didn't pay that much attention to a holiday called Veteran's Day. As I reached high school, that's when I started to pay a little more attention. It was because of a fierce and seemed to be timeless war called the Vietnam War. There were people young and old who wanted it to end. I was one of them. A lot of activist and peace groups were formed to voice their oppositions and to protest against the war. I also joined in a few peace marches myself, but still didn't quite fully understand the true meaning of everything that evolved around me. Not until the war was finally declared over and our troops came back home again. That's when I started to comprehend a little bit more about Veteran's Day. There was something wrong though. When those brave men and women arrived home, they weren't treated with the cheers, parades, and glory they well deserved. Instead, they were looked down on, resented, and some even humiliated by the very same country who sent them there in the first place. Eventually, they faded away and were forgotten. I didn't understand the cruelty of it all. As the years went by, we find ourselves in another war, this time with the Middle East. The cruelty and disrespect to our veterans of the past was brought up once again when our brave military men and women started losing their lives for our country. This time though, something changed. Our brave Veterans of the past started to be recognized for who they really are, and that is heroes. I now fully understand the holiday called Veteran's Day. Our heroes of past and present must never be forgotten, what they've fought for then and now, and they did it for the one thing they promised us, and that's to protect and serve this great nation. I now have a daughter and son-in-law in the Untied States Air Force. I am a very proud military parent. Someday they will become Veterans also, and be recognized for the dignity, and honor they too will deserve. To all of our Veterans of past and present, we will forever salute you for your service and heroism, because you made our nation the land of the free and the home of the brave...
